The bell has already rung. Sit down.
The whole game runs right here — nothing to download, nothing to install.
A transfer student,
and the seat at the back.
You are the new transfer student at Olympeius University, class 4-B. You type in your name, your surname and your pronouns on the first screen, and the game remembers them for every line afterwards. Behind you in the corridor is the reason you came: your family's farm, and a debt you cannot walk away from.
The opening is narrated over Poe's Annabel Lee, and the game keeps coming back to it. Day 1 is titled The Beloved. Day 2 is titled The Kingdom. Between them sits the class representative Crowe, who is your closest friend in a school of hundreds, and Sol, who is not.
This is a work in progress. The build ends on a literal To be Continued card, and the creator says so on the title screen.
A pure soul corrupted by betrayal is such a rare delicacy.
Everything you need, in six notes.
There are no tricks and no hidden buttons. It is a short branching story — read it, choose, replay.
- 01
Set yourself up first
The game asks for your first name, last name and pronouns, and then how you want to be referred to — neutral, feminine or masculine. It threads those words through every line, so do it properly.
- 02
The back of the room is the point
The title is literal. You are seated at the back, which is where the whole game puts you: watching the group dynamics, being noticed late, and being the last to know what is going on.
- 03
Two favour meters decide it
Crowe and Sol each have a favour value from 0 to 10. Conversations move them up or down, and the game clamps them at both ends. Your ending follows whichever way you leaned.
- 04
Bad endings are real endings
One of the three routes is a Bad End called No Witnesses. It is not a punishment screen — it is one of the three endings shipped in this version.
- 05
Read the glossary
The in-game glossary is a character codex with full profiles, the creator's own notes on each character, and a relationship chart. Several backgrounds are still marked TBA.

Plays right here
The full build runs in the player above — no download, no install. It is still incomplete, so expect rough edges and the odd bug.
What it actually looks like.
Real screens from the build, not mockups.
Before you play
This game is rated 18+ and states that minors are strictly prohibited. The creator's own trigger list covers screen shaking and motion, graphic violence including blood, gore, amputation and beheadings, major character death, death of the player character, firearms and sharp objects, drugging, and implied child neglect and abuse. The game also states it contains sexual assault, non-consensual touching and sex, implied abuse and bullying, and that it should not be romanticised or replicated in real life. There is an SFW build toggle on the warning screen at startup.
Before you settle in?
The short version of everything above.
Is The Kid at the Back finished?
No, and the game tells you so. The title screen states it is still in development and incomplete and may have bugs, and the story closes on a To be Continued card. What is here is two full in-game days and three endings.
How many endings are there?
Three in this version: the Day 1 ending on the Crowe route, the Sol route ending on Day 2, and a Bad End called No Witnesses. 42 choice points and two favour meters, both clamped between 0 and 10, decide which one you get.
Does it have voice acting?
No. The engine build reports has_voice as true, but that is an unmodified Ren'Py template default — there is no voice directory in the game and no recorded lines.
What languages is it available in?
English only. There is no translation folder in the build and no language picker, even though the text is wrapped for translation.
How long does it take to finish?
The game does not state a length anywhere. Judging from the scripts it is two in-game days with about 33,000 words of dialogue — expect an afternoon rather than an evening.
